Digital Smile Design

Facial proportions, lip line and tooth shape are reviewed on screen so you can see the proposed outcome before any treatment starts.

What is it?

Digital smile design is not a treatment in itself — it is a planning tool. Photographs of your face, images from an intraoral scan and a short video of you speaking are combined; tooth length, the midline, the lip line and overall facial proportions are measured from this data, and the suggested design is built on screen.

Why does it matter?

The most common difficulty in aesthetic dentistry is a mismatch between what the patient pictures and what the dentist has planned. Reviewing the design on screen, before a single tooth is prepared, brings that mismatch to light early.

The process can go a step further: the proposed form can be applied directly to your teeth using a temporary material (a mock-up). You can then see it in the mirror, notice how it feels while speaking, and give feedback such as "make this part a little shorter." Feedback at this stage is one of the most valuable parts of treatment.

Its limits

The design is a forecasting tool, not a guarantee of the final result. Gum level, the support provided by the bone, the forces generated on biting, and the condition of your existing tooth structure all determine what can actually be achieved. Not every shape seen on screen can be reproduced exactly in the mouth; these limits are discussed openly during the planning consultation.

This page is general information and does not replace a dental examination. Whether the treatment suits you, and the method and duration, are decided only after an intraoral examination and radiographic assessment.

After treatment

  • Arriving at the analysis appointment without make-up helps the photographs be assessed accurately.
  • The mock-up is temporary — avoid testing it with hard foods.
  • Let us know about any changes to the design before treatment begins.
  • The design you approve is saved to your file and used as the reference during treatment.
