Composite Bonding

Correcting form, edges and small gaps with composite resin in a single visit, usually with little to no reduction of the tooth.

What is it?

Bonding involves applying tooth-coloured composite resin directly onto the tooth and hand-shaping it. No laboratory work is involved — the whole procedure is finished at the same appointment.

Its clearest advantage is that it can be undone: in many cases nothing is removed from the tooth, only the surface is lightly roughened. That makes it a sensible first step, especially for younger patients, before moving to something permanent.

When is it a good choice?

It suits small chips in the front teeth, worn biting edges, narrow gaps between teeth, minor differences in shape, and colour mismatch limited to a single tooth.

For widespread discolouration, advanced wear or strong bite forces, porcelain veneers offer a more lasting solution.

How long does it last?

Composite stains more easily than porcelain over time and can lose its shine; coffee, tea and smoking speed this up. Polishing or renewal may be needed every few years. On the other hand, repair is straightforward: a chipped section can simply be built up again rather than replaced entirely.

This page is general information and does not replace a dental examination. Whether the treatment suits you, and the method and duration, are decided only after an intraoral examination and radiographic assessment.

After treatment

  • Stay away from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking for the first 48 hours.
  • Do not bite hard objects with your front teeth — nuts, ice, bones.
  • Habits like nail-biting or chewing on pens will chip the bonding.
  • Skip abrasive whitening toothpaste, as it dulls the surface over time.
  • Schedule a check-up and polish once a year.
