What does this treatment involve?

A completely edentulous jaw does not require a separate implant for every missing tooth. Four implants — six in some cases — placed anteriorly and at a specific angle can support a fixed prosthesis covering the whole jaw. The angled placement technique can reduce the need for additional grafting despite the bone loss that develops over time in the back of the jaw.

Who might consider this option?

It is generally considered for patients who have lost all their teeth, are unhappy with their current removable denture, or whose remaining teeth all need to be extracted. Suitability is decided from tomography scans, evaluating bone volume and density together with gum condition and overall health.

Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and certain medications (bisphosphonates in particular) can raise the risk, so these are discussed separately.

How does the treatment process unfold?

  1. Planning stage. Three-dimensional tomography, an intraoral scan and prosthetic planning are carried out together. Implant positions are determined by where the prosthesis needs to sit — the process does not run the other way around.
  2. Surgery day. Extractions are performed if needed, implants are placed, and in most patients a fixed temporary prosthesis is fitted the same day.
  3. Healing period. This typically lasts three to six months; a soft diet and careful cleaning need attention throughout.
  4. Definitive prosthesis stage. Once healing is complete, impressions are taken and the final prosthesis is prepared.

What should you know about expectations and care?

A fixed prosthesis makes a clear difference to chewing function compared with a removable denture. In return, it calls for a more thorough maintenance routine: special brushes and a water flosser are recommended to clean underneath it. Having the prosthesis removed for professional cleaning at least once a year is advised.

No treatment method can be guaranteed for life; long-term success is directly tied to bone condition, hygiene habits and smoking.

After treatment

  • Keep to soft, lukewarm food during the first week.
  • Apply something cold for the first 24 hours; avoid heat.
  • Smoking directly harms the healing process — stopping for at least two weeks is advised.
  • Use the brushes and water flosser recommended to clean beneath the prosthesis regularly.
  • Take all medication prescribed for you exactly as directed.
  • Do not miss your review appointments; these are scheduled more frequently in the first year.
